The kinetics of ettringite formation and dilatation in a blended cement with beta-hemihydrate and anhydrite as calcium sulfate. / Evju, C; Hansen, Staffan.. In: Cement and Concrete Research, Vol. 35, No. 12, 2005, p. 2310-2321. Research output: Contribution to journal › Article
The formation of ettringite was observed only for the high pH solutions in the experiments, whereas its thermochemical possibility from the air-cooled BF slags was always expected by the calculation. The kinetic analysis showed that the dissolution of alumina from the slag may control the whole reaction rate.
Expansion of hydrated mixtures made with C3A, CaSO4 · 2H2O, Ca(OH)2 and SiO2, at 22, 30, 40, 50, 60°C, was studied to verify if expansion is associated with colloidal ettringite formation or with the solid state conversion of C4AH13 to monosulfate hydrate in presence of calcium hydroxide. Paper prepared for presentation at the Session: Structures of the 2016 Annual Conference of the Transportation Association of Canada Toronto, ON ABSTRACT A Fe dosage no more than 20% conspicuously accelerated the crystal growth of ettringite by increasing the surface energy in the (0 0 1) direction, whereas a higher dosage suppressed the formation of ettringite as the high incorporation of Fe ions into the ettringite crystal was energetically unstable. From the results of our investigation it can be drawn the conclusion that mortars expansion is in From the historical perspective Delayed Ettringite Formation (DEF) is known to occur usually in cementitious systems made at high cement contents with … Delayed ettringite formation (DEF) refers to a deterioration process of cementitious materials that have been exposed to high temperatures and subsequent moist conditions, often resulting in damaging expansion. The occurrence of DEF-related damage may lead to severe economic consequences.
All types of chemical expansion phenomena, including those due to alkali aggregate reactions and those due to ettringite formation, are addressed.

Delayed Ettringite Formation (DEF): Hardened concrete that has been subjected to high-temperature heat curing or high internal hydration heat temperature may suffer from expansion and cracking during subsequent exposure to moisture.

To keep the risk for secondary ettringite formation at a reasonable level, the current water soluble sulfate limit in coarse recycled aggregates is established at 0.2% by EN 206 [29], with no specific The present paper analyzes the combination effect of slag and limestone filler on the expansion caused by delayed ettringite formation (DEF). Tests were carried out on heat-cured ternary cement mortars with various replacement levels of cement by both limestone filler and slag (15%, 25%, and 45%). 2000-02-28 · sulfate in the cement is normally consumed to form ettringite at early ages. The formation of ettringite in the fresh, plastic concrete is the mechanism that controls stiffening. At this stage ettringite is uniformly and discretely dispersed throughout the cement paste at a submicroscopic level (less than a micrometer1 in cross-section).
